The brochure says “Experience True Africa” in robust lettering. Beautiful young African women and men adorn the three-part literature outlined in an electric array of colors and phrases like, “Standing Ovations” and “Knock Out”.
I anticipated seeing a talented group of performers when I arrived at the Umoja Welcome Reception for the cast and the community held at the Harvey B. Gantt Center this Monday; however I truly had no idea.
Every single expectation that I had for the night was met and exceeded by the talent, grace, showmanship, and authenticity of the Umoja cast.
With powerful voices and energetic flare, this talented group of South African young men and women captivated the attention and arrested the hearts of all those in attendance.
I could try to describe the emotionality of their artistry, but words simply can’t cover it.
You just have to be there—to feel it, and live in that moment with them.

Umoja is currently running at the Belk Theater. Performance dates are July 23-28 and tickets are currently still available.
